Father’s Day

The night before Father’s Day we went all over Georgetown looking for flour so I could make crepes for everyone before church. Well I thought I was being so very clever-you know, one of  those Einstein moments that make you think you really are a genius that hasn’t been given the right tasks or asked the right questions so every one realized just how super intelligent you really are! Usually this is when the universe focuses all of it’s attention towards you just to show you how wrong you really are.

It was past 9 and there are no grocery stores in Georgetown, so my great idea was to go to the Cupcake shop and buy 2 cups of flour, but their flour was already packed for the night, then I thought Chipotle the Mexican restaurant surely makes their own tortillas, nope then maybe at Uno’s Pizza they must make their own dough, again a big fat NO. So My Love and I hopped on a bus and found an all night grocery store about 20 minutes away. It was so much fun! The key is going through life doing what ever needs to be done with the coolest person you know. Hopefully that person is your spouse!!!

We had delicious crepes for breakfast and gifts. Jared got a gift card from his mom for Borders and Pops got an Abraham Lincoln tie from me and Jo Ann. The kids all signed cards and gave hugs.

 

We went to church and met many of Gary and Jo Ann’s wonderful students. They all talked about father’s making me so grateful for the loving and wonderful father I have and my children have as well.

After church we went to The National Cathedral-beautiful!

 

   

They have a little kid class with this little organ and little chairs, so cute!!

We had a wonderful dinner home made Manicotti. I have never had it before but it is now one of my favorite Italian dishes!!! Jo Ann you are a wonderful cook!!

After dinner we went to see Jason, an intern, play the piano-he is awesome!! Tristan was watching him the whole time and giggled after every song. He even took requests. I can’t wait for his CD!!

 

We had one last place to go before we left for NY.

Tristan & Maria were the only ones we took because the other two were way too lazy!

The Vietnam Memorial “The Wall”

It was Father’s Day so there were roses all along the wall. Jared took this really nice shot of the roses along the wall. There was an awesome volunteer who gave us the whole scoop about the place.

So Maya Ying Lin who came up with the design of the memorial was a student at Yale who received a B+ for her design. She wanted to enter it in the contest for a new Vietnam War Memorial so her teacher said try it and see what happens. Maya won. The center of the wall begins on one side with the very first casualty in 1959, whose son is found later on the wall in 1965, and the names wrap around until they return to that very first name creating a circle of closure to the war. The wall is the tallest in the middle and goes out and down as it extends away from the center like a wide open V. This represents the stabbing from a knife in the dirt. The grass originally grew right up to the wall so when you saw the wall from above all you would see is a solid  black line surrounded by grass as a scare that would never be forgotten on our skin. They had to replace the grass with sidewalk because it is the most visited Memorial in the world. Maya was not happy about it. In the last 10 years they have replaced the concrete sidewalk 3 times. You look through the names of the dead to your reflection seeing the many who gave their life so you could  live. The names are in chronological order. The Wall is not government owned or funded and is maintained by volunteers. Early every Saturday morning a group of them come to polish the wall.

         It was incredible being there!!!
